Inception Featurette aiming for The Oscars

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight was shut out of the 2008 Oscar race for Best Picture, but with ten slots available for the 2010 nominees, it’s looking likely that his critically-acclaimed box office smash Inception will be getting a nomination.  However, since there are still only five slots for Best Director, there are really only five nominees for Best Picture and then five honorable mentions.  Warner Bros. wants to get Inception on the short list and so they’ve released a “new” behind-the-scenes featurette for the film.  It’s mostly EPK (electronic press kit) footage, but the beginning and end of the featurette are new.  This isn’t so much to encourage people to see the movie (chances are you already have), but to remind Awards voters that Nolan made a remarkable picture.  While all the momentum seems to currently be behind The Social Network, it’s still early enough for other contenders to garner favor.
Hit the jump to check out the featurette.

'Toy Story 3' Oscar Campaign Ads!

Despite the efforts of literally only a few of reviewers, Toy Story 3 has become the most universally praised film of the year. With a 99% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, it seems like you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't love the heartfelt goodbye to Andy's Toys. While Toy Story 3 is almost a surefire winner for Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards, Pixar is shooting for the moon this time. Several Oscar campaign ads have surfaced showing that Pixar wants the sequel follow in the footsteps of Beauty and the Beast and Up to become another animated film nominated for Best Picture. But this time they actually want to win!

And the Winners are....

The 81st Academy Awards have arrived and it's time to announce the winners of the most prestigious award in Hollywood. The ceremony is being held live at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood where host Hugh Jackman will be taking us on an Oscars journey like we've never seen before. While my own favorite film, The Dark Knight, didn't get as much Oscar love as we think it deserved, there is still a fine selection of other great nominees this year, including Slumdog Millionaire and Mickey Rourke, amongst others.

ACTOR:

ACTRESS:

Read on for the complete list of nominees and to follow our live winners updates with editorial!

This will be updated throughout the night to reflect the winners. Additionally, I occasionally might add a small bit of editorial commentary beneath each category. Winners are highlighted in BOLD below.

PICTURE

DIRECTOR
Winner! Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionaire
Stephen Daldry - The Reader
Clint Eastwood - Changeling

Thoughts: I loved this movie, so of course I'm glad that Danny Boyle won. He's a wonderful person as well as a fantastic director. Congrats, Mr. Boyle!

ACTOR
Richard Jenkins - The Visitor
Frank Langella - Frost/Nixon
Winner! Sean Penn - Milk
Brad Pitt - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler

Thoughts: Wow, let me be the first to say, Sean Penn deserves this! He was exceptional, and I called it, the moment I saw Milk, I said he deserves it and should get it. I love Mickey Rourke, I think he should've also got it, but I'm just as happy with Sean Penn as well. Congratulations to both of them!

ACTRESS
Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie - Changeling
Melissa Leo - Frozen River
Meryl Streep - Doubt
Winner! Kate Winslet - The Reader

Thoughts: Okay, Winslet isn't bad, but I wasn't impressed by her. Truthfully, I would've much rather seen Meryl Streep or Anne Hathaway win instead, because both of them really did an incredible job, whereas Winslet was just normal. I'm not a Kate Winslet fan and I'm not afraid to admit that I don't like her much, but oh well, I expected her to take this anyway. I guess maybe she does deserve it?

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Josh Brolin - Milk
Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman - Doubt

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Amy Adams - Doubt
Winner! Penelope Cruz - Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis - Doubt

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Courtney Hunt - Frozen River
Mike Leigh - Happy-Go-Lucky
Martin McDonagh - In Bruges
Winner! Dustin Lance Black - Milk

Thoughts: I loved Milk, and think it deserves this, but really, Wall-E, why not Wall-E?! Even my screenwriter friend thought the Wall-E script was the best one of the nominees!

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Eric Roth & Robin Swicord - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
John Patrick Shanley - Doubt
Peter Morgan - Frost/Nixon
David Hare - The Reader
Winner! Simon Beaufoy - Slumdog Millionaire

Thoughts: As expected, don't have any complaints about this, since I loved Slumdog Millionaire and Beaufoy is a great writer, so he definitely deserves it!

Tom Stern - Changeling
Claudio Miranda - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Wally Pfister - The Dark Knight
Chris Menges & Roger Deakins - The Reader

Winner! Spielzeugland (Toyland)

VISUAL EFFECTS
Winner! The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Iron Man

Thoughts: Alright, I'm sorry, but The Dark Knight deserved this hands down, and as great as the effects were in Benjamin Button, this is stupid to see The Dark Knight continually screwed. Come on, this is ridiculous, was the ever a moment you DIDN'T believe the VFX in The Dark Knight?

Academy disqualifies 'Dark' score

Interview: Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in their continued efforts to avoid awarding Oscars to deserving efforts in film scores, has apparently disqualified Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's work on The Dark Knight. According to Variety, the same stipulation as to how many composers are technically listed on the cue sheet similarly screwed over their Batman Begins score -- the stipulation being that listing multiple names helps to award royalties to music editors and designers as well.

Zimmer previously said that listing multiple names on the cue sheet was a way of financially rewarding parts of the music team who helped make the overall work successful.

Zimmer, Howard and the other three individuals -- music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe -- reportedly signed an affidavit stating that the score was primarily the work of Zimmer and Howard.

That apparently wasn't enough for the majority of the committee, which was also supplied with documentation indicating that more than 60%, but less than 70%, of the score was credited to Zimmer and Howard.

I'd argue that the film -- which is bound to crack a billion bucks worldwide any day now, and likely to rack up considerable awards nominations regardless -- owes a great deal of its sustained visceral thrills to this rousing score, and in an ideal world, the December 9th release of the DVD would be enough for the Academy to whip around and shape up their bureaucratic brouhaha. To them, I simply ask this: why so serious?

WALL-E submitted in Oscar animation category

WALL-E was officially announced today as one of fourteen animated films submitted to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 81st Oscars, to be telecast on Sunday, February 22, 2009.

Disney's Bolt (stay tuned here for special coverage, coming soon) was also submitted, in hopes of getting a nomination.

Disney is, of course, pitching WALL-E in the most prestigious Oscar category —Best Picture— smartly ignoring any potential risk of vote-splitting between the two categories.
