Street Fighter: 0% Rotten Tomatoes

Well Street Fighter has hit the theaters. Just for context, a year ago Jonh over at themovieblog.com wrote this about Street Fighter:

Now, if you’re sitting there reading that cast list and thinking “my dear sweet lord, this this is going to be horrible”, let your mind be at peace. The good news is that the man who directed such classics as Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds and Cradle 2 the Grave, Mr. Andrzej Bartkowiak is directing so there’s nothing to worry about. Oh wait a second… all those movies SUCKED. Yeah, not a lot of hope for this disaster in the making.

And sure enough… as of this moment Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li is sitting at a big 0%. Maybe it’s just me… but I can’t remember another wide release film that held a 0% after being released in theaters. Who knows… maybe it’ll get lucky and someone will give it a positive review in the next few days… but I think the odds of that are pretty low.

So the big question here is… is anyone surprised?

Japanese Street Fighter Trailer

The first trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li is now online, and although it's the Japanese version (which would explain the non-English voiceover), it still looks like a half-decent fighting flick. And, I mean, c'mon -- what else are you looking for out of a film like Street Fighter? Are there lots of badass fights in the streets? According to this trailer, yes. Good. Done. Satisfied.

Based on the popular video game (which you had to have played at some point in your life -- remember the one where you were feverishly tapping buttons, while your friends yelled "Dude, how did you do that roundhouse kick?" -- and you were all like, "I don't know, I'm just hitting the buttons as fast as I can!"), Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li follows, well, the legend of the female warrior Chun Li (Kristin Kreuk) as she sets out on a quest for justice ... or something like that. Look, just bring on the fights -- that's all we want.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li hits theaters on February 27th. Check out the trailer above, and look for an English-language preview to arrive real soon.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Poster and Website

From one beloved Asian franchise to the next. They've already ruined Dragonball, so why not Street Fighter, too? Fox is in some deep shit already (for Dragonball) and I'm sure they're going to have to dig themselves out of this rut, too. We missed this news over the weekend (or maybe I thought the poster was ugly), but I thought I'd throw it out there today. A Japanese poster has been discovered and the official Japanese website for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li has launched. Don't bother wasting your time on either of these unless you're a big fan or if you want a headache for the rest of the day.

To visit the utterly boring website for the film, head over to streetfighter-movie.gyao.jp or just click the poster below. And other than that, you're more than welcome to look at this painfully ugly poster. Is it me or did they really try and make Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk look a bit too much like Chun-Li, who is of Chinese decent? Oh well, I guess that's what you get when Hollywood tinkers with a foreign franchise!

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is being directed by ex-cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, of Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Doom. The script for this was penned by up-and-coming screenwriter Justin Marks, who also penned screenplays for Masters of the Universe and Voltron. Hong Kong fight choreographer Dion Lam, who previously worked on The Matrix Trilogy, Spider-Man 2, and all of Bartkowiak's previous films, is handling the fight sequences. Fox currently has Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li set to arrive in theaters on February 27th, 2009.

New Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Set photos

A handful of new photos from the set of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li have just been posted on the Legend Films website. Not only do we get to see additional photos of Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li, but we get our first look at Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog and a few of the locations they're shooting at.
There's not enough in these photos to actually start making judgments about the direction of this movie, because looking at these alone makes me think it could be pretty good. My only hesitation is with Michael Clarke Duncan, but maybe it's just a bad photo. Thoughts?

We've posted six of the photos below, but you can take a look at a few more over on the official website. These photos look pretty cool, but that's probably just because the filmmaking process is mesmerizing. However, I don't think any of these are going to convince anyone that Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li could actually turn out good? I'm still crossing my fingers, though…
