Street Fighter: 0% Rotten Tomatoes

Well Street Fighter has hit the theaters. Just for context, a year ago Jonh over at themovieblog.com wrote this about Street Fighter:

Now, if you’re sitting there reading that cast list and thinking “my dear sweet lord, this this is going to be horrible”, let your mind be at peace. The good news is that the man who directed such classics as Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds and Cradle 2 the Grave, Mr. Andrzej Bartkowiak is directing so there’s nothing to worry about. Oh wait a second… all those movies SUCKED. Yeah, not a lot of hope for this disaster in the making.

And sure enough… as of this moment Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li is sitting at a big 0%. Maybe it’s just me… but I can’t remember another wide release film that held a 0% after being released in theaters. Who knows… maybe it’ll get lucky and someone will give it a positive review in the next few days… but I think the odds of that are pretty low.

So the big question here is… is anyone surprised?

US Poster for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

From KristenKreukWeb we have the new, and I'm assuming only, U.S. poster for "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li". If you thought floating heads were bad, then you have not experienced them jammed into fighting bodies. I also like how Kreuk, the star and title character of the film, has been relegated to the lower right-corner of the poster because she needed the biggest head but only that dude's torso had enough room. There Kreuk will dwell until she emerges a la Kuato.

I also like how this is the "Legend of Chun-Li" but while the Japanese Poster had the balls to show Kreuk dressed in Chun-Li but here, a hot lady in a kimono wearing oversized spiked bracelets won't sell a movie. What does sell: two dudes filled with faces, punching each other in the face. They've got my ticket.

Finally, because there just isn't enough to rip on with this atrocious poster, look at the tagline: "Some fight for power. Some fight for us." You know, because the two are mutually exclusive.

The script was penned by up-and-coming screenwriter Justin Marks, who also penned screenplays for Masters of the Universe and Voltron. Hong Kong fight choreographer Dion Lam, who previously worked on The Matrix Trilogy, Spider-Man 2, and all of Bartkowiak's previous films, is handling the fight sequences. Fox is debuting Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in theaters everywhere on February 27th. See you in theaters!

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Poster and Website

From one beloved Asian franchise to the next. They've already ruined Dragonball, so why not Street Fighter, too? Fox is in some deep shit already (for Dragonball) and I'm sure they're going to have to dig themselves out of this rut, too. We missed this news over the weekend (or maybe I thought the poster was ugly), but I thought I'd throw it out there today. A Japanese poster has been discovered and the official Japanese website for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li has launched. Don't bother wasting your time on either of these unless you're a big fan or if you want a headache for the rest of the day.

To visit the utterly boring website for the film, head over to streetfighter-movie.gyao.jp or just click the poster below. And other than that, you're more than welcome to look at this painfully ugly poster. Is it me or did they really try and make Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk look a bit too much like Chun-Li, who is of Chinese decent? Oh well, I guess that's what you get when Hollywood tinkers with a foreign franchise!

New Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Set photos

A handful of new photos from the set of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li have just been posted on the Legend Films website. Not only do we get to see additional photos of Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li, but we get our first look at Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog and a few of the locations they're shooting at.
There's not enough in these photos to actually start making judgments about the direction of this movie, because looking at these alone makes me think it could be pretty good. My only hesitation is with Michael Clarke Duncan, but maybe it's just a bad photo. Thoughts?

We've posted six of the photos below, but you can take a look at a few more over on the official website. These photos look pretty cool, but that's probably just because the filmmaking process is mesmerizing. However, I don't think any of these are going to convince anyone that Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li could actually turn out good? I'm still crossing my fingers, though…

Justin Marks Adapting Hack/Slash Comic

Hack/Slash

After tackling Voltron, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li, and He-Man, screenwriter Justin Marks will move on to adapt the comicbook Hack/Slash. The series revolves around Cassie Hack, a young woman who travels the country and takes on homicidal maniacs and serial killers along the way. Hack/Slash marks another high profile project for Justin Marks, which should say quite a bit about his talent, but then again most of his new projects haven't hit theaters yet. This was actually announced previously (around Comic-Con last year), but it seems Marks has been brought on to re-write the script.

Rogue Pictures is adapting with Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter, of 2007's Hitman, and upcoming flicks Spy Hunter, Kane and Lynch, and Jonny Quest, producing. Newcomer Todd Lincoln has been set to direct. The film is being described as an action movie that will be heavy on comedy and horror, which sounds about right considering the story. The focus of the series is on a horror victim, Cassie, who strikes back at the monsters, known as "slashers", with Vlad, a freakish man who frequently wears a gas mask. You can pick up a copy over at Amazon.com.

At Comic-Con last year, STYD reported that Megan Fox "is incredibly interested" in the role of Cassie. That's definitely the perfect choice and I truly hope she gets on board.

I'm not sure why, but I've heard of Hack/Slash enough (or maybe seen it on the show floor at comic conventions) to believe it might lend itself to a good film adaptation, but I could be wrong. Unfortunately I can never get The Covenant out of my mind when I think about lesser-known comic projects like this, and that's definitely not a good thing. Hopefully Marks keeps the cheese out and write a new script that Lincoln can turn into something enjoyable. We'll definitely be keeping our eye on this project as it develops.
