I didn't catch this when it first hit, but I thought it was good news anyway. IGN talked with filmmaker Gore Verbinski last week and got a quick update on the status of the BioShock movie, but more importantly he spoke about how it "has to be R, a hard R." A video game movie that's hard R? I don't think Universal will ever make this movie (they already canceled Verbinski's original version due to budget constraints) especially after the mediocre performance of the video game movie Prince of Persia.

Gore Verbinski is set to direct an adaptation of Take-Two's hugely popular videogame title Bioshock. According to Variety, this is the first project in the recent three-year first-look deal that the director signed with Universal Pictures.
The Aviator screenwriter John Logan is adapting the story for the big screen. The events in the film will revolve around a mysterious event that happens to the underwater world known as Rapture. Verbinski stated, "The people here have a genuine passion for filmmaking and a deep appreciation of the cinematic experience. I look forward to taking my own productivity up a notch both as a producer and director, by building a brand that will focus on my core business while synergizing multiple forms of entertainment."
A sequel to the videogame is being produced for release in 2009, and will make its appearance before the film is finished shooting. The film is looking at a potential 2010 release date.

Bioshock Movie Has A Director

Why am I so excited by this? You wouldn't need to ask if you've ever played the game, but it was hailed universally by critics for it's dark atmosphere, and brilliant story about the fall of a gigantic underwater city, and the twisted drug-fuelled "Splicers", "Big Daddies" & "Little Sisters" that inhabit its ruins.
The game centered on a plane crash survivor known as Jack, who, suffering from amnesia, finds himself in the city of Rapture, being guided to a hopeful return to the surface by a man known only as Atlas. But that's just the start of the fun - trust me, this one is gonna be great, and the fact that a guy like Verbinski is in charge only furthers my happiness.
Now - would you kindly get yourself a copy of the game to get ready? ;)
