Lusomundo Opens first Digital 3d Cinema in Mozambique

Maputo-Mozambique — Moviegoers can breathe a sigh of relief.

The summer movie season is back in business in Maputo-Mozambique. Lusomundo (a Portuguese integrated media corporation) expects to have two 3d screens up and running for a June 08 opening. These are the first 3d Cinemas in Mozambique.

Till now, Maputo had only 3 movie Theaters operating and from those, one shows only bollywood films. The other two (both also managed by Lusomundo) were in very bad shape and strugled to stay alive showing 4+ months old movies. Barely having any public. The heavy film piracy striking Maputo, played a very important role on the sad fate of these two cinemas.  Both theaters are now closed, one (Cinema Gil Vicente) for a major renovation and the other one (Cinema Xenon) was sold.

The New auditoriums are inside Maputo Shopping Center, a popular shopping center in Maputo.

These theaters include two 3D screens and digital projectors for increased quality of images and sound, 250 seats each. Movies are now downloaded into the projectors.

While the opening is a little later than hoped, Lusomundo  should  still be in time to get in the summer blockbuster “The Avengers.”

Initially they didn’t expect to be able to show “The Avengers,” which opened May 4. But the movie has done so well it remains No. 2 at the box office, the 3rd highest grossing movie of all times and continues to pull in viewers.

When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. The star studded cast includes Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, as well as Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgård who are reprising their respective roles from Thor. Marvel's The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon (Serenity)

Other movie initially expected is the sci-fi thriller “Prometheus”.

Prometheus is directed by legendary Oscar nominated filmmaker Ridley Scott, who started it all withAlien and Blade Runner, also directing Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, American Gangster, Body of Lies and Robin Hood most recently. The screenplay was originally written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour), then updated by Damon Lindelof of "Lost" and Cowboys & Aliens, Star Trek 2. Fox has Prometheus set to hit theaters in 3D starting June 8th.

Lusomundo says nothing about pricing. I hope this innovation is not going to translate into an increase in movie ticket costs other than the higher price typically charged for a 3D movie anywhere in the world.
