Terminator Salvation Targeting PG-13 Rating

Variety reports that with production starting today on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, producers at the Halcyon Co. say they aim to deliver a PG-13 movie to Warner Bros. for release on May 22, 2009.The "Terminator" series is one of the highest-grossing R-rated franchises of all time, with the first three films having grossed more than $1.03 billion worldwide. "The ratings have changed," said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek, a broker-turned-writer-producer. "The PG-13 has increased in intensity."

A family-friendly rating opens many doors, including a "Terminator Salvation" licensing deal for action figures with Playmates Toys.

"Our merchandising program will be the largest to date for 'The Terminator,' " said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Derek Anderson, ex-owner of ad agency In the Mix, who adds that he had not discussed the possibility of an R-rating with Warners. "We won't force it. We are carrying on in the tradition of the mythology, with an exciting approach to the action. If we can make a compelling film to reach the widest audience, why wouldn't we do it?"

Halcyon has already launched Halcyon Games to create a "Terminator" game for release at the same time as the movie. "The first three games were all bad," Anderson said. "The core fans are screaming for something fresh; they won't be just playing the movie."

Set in post-apocalyptic 2029, an adult John Connor, played by Christian Bale, leads the war to save humanity from the killing machines. Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Moon Bloodgood co-star.

  1. ie, youll have to make a middle of the road film to try and get as many kiddies to by your cheap plastic toys. The third film was ruined by this, you cant eevn see the originals on tv now wthout all the blood and things that made them awsome films cut out. ok so pan away from the action and loud scream off camera, very scary. but i want to see soemone get "blown away" i want there to be blood if someones getting killed, come on.

  2. Thanks for getting my hopes up and then blowing it with a PG13 rating, I can't wait to see a mildy violent Terminator F u a hole. Christian Bale is the man, the Kid playing Reese is suspect and if I don't see some quality Terminating I'm going to be pissed. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  3. What a R rating was in the 80's with violence & gore is now PG-13. R ratings are held for movies now with excessive violence, nudity, and that good ole F-BOMB. lol. It the producers allow this movie to be made properly I believe the director can do it. Give it your best shot McG! I'll be there. But note if it feels like T3 I'm walking out! :) Seriously.

  4. If this isn't going to be the best terminator film, and turns into some stupid feel good movie where there are random dancing scenes:

I will buy the terminator DVD, snap it into one million pieces, rinse it in toilet water, and mail it to the director with a thankyou letter for destroying something awsome!

  6. Once again the franchising is more important than the fan-base. Oh, and if you try and plug the gaps of a workable script with an overload of cgi and political-correctness (Obama-nomics), this film will flop..

  9. It's unfortunate that those in charge of marketing the film have even opted to try and grab a Nickelodeon Award out of the whole thing. By diluting the film's gritty story-line, I have a feeling that yet another cherished constant of life in the Terminator series will be sacrificed to the gods of political correctness. I'm the type of guy who thought The Dark Knight could have been darker; and I know there's a lot of you out there who agree. To the new Terminator bosses, for heaven's sake, stick with the R-rating, you fucking cyborg-corporate-cocksuckers, and stop watering down good shit. The last thing we need is another 8-year-old asking his mom for a Terminator Halloween costume from Party City.
