Forbidden Kingdom Fights Off Sarah Marshall


Lionsgate's The Forbidden Kingdom, the first team-up of Jackie Chan and Jet Li on the big screen, fought off a new Judd Apatow-produced comedy to take first place with an estimated $20.9 million. The Rob Minkoff-directed opened in 3,151 theaters and averaged $6,623 per location. The film also stars Michael Angarano, Collin Chou, Crystal Liu Yi Fei and Li Bing Bing.

Universal's Forgetting Sarah Marshall, with Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and Russell Brand, debuted in the second spot with an estimated $17.3 million from 2,798 theaters, an average of $6,200 per site. Written by Segel, directed by Nick Stoller, and produced by Judd Apatow, the "romantic disaster comedy" cost about $30 million to make.

Last week's champ, Screen Gems' Prom Night, dropped a hefty 56.3% in ticket sales to bring in $9.1 million in its second weekend for a total of $32.6 million. The horror remake, starring Brittany Snow, was budgeted at $20 million.

TriStar thriller 88 Minutes, starring Al Pacino, opened with $6.8 million from 2,168 theaters in fourth place. The Jon Avnet-directed pic averaged $3,136.

Fox Walden's Nim's Island rounded out the top five with $5.7 million and has pushed its three-week total of $32.9 million. Starring Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler, the fantasy-adventure cost $37 million to produce.

Sony's 21 added $5.5 million in its fourth weekend and has collected $69.98 million so far, while Fox Searchlight Pictures' Street Kings made $4 million and has earned $19.9 million after two weeks.

Also new in theaters, Ben Stein's Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed earned $3.2 million from 1,052 theaters.

In limited release, Morgan Spurlock's Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? received $143,000 from 102 theaters, thriller Pathology took in $50,000 from 46 locations, and Willem Dafoe's Anamorph got $3,000 from just one theater.

Ticket sales were up for the first time in a month as the top 12 movies earned $82.1 million, up 12 percent from the same weekend last year.
