Second Trailer for Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' Trilogy + Alternate Endings

Warner Bros/WingNut Films have unveiled the new trailer for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the beginning of Bilbo's three-part adventure into Middle Earth. Martin Freeman plays Bilbo Baggins, and is joined by the company of dwarves, lead by Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. Of course, Sir Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf, and there's glimpses of Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving and even Sylvester McCoy as Radagast the Brown. This is a much more magnificent and, honestly, more exciting improvement over the first trailer, which I enjoyed, but I think Jackson is settling into the story and getting ready to bring us another spectacular fantasy epic.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey gets a Massive Banner!

Whoa, what kind of odd marketing is this? Entertainment Weekly (via ComingSoon) has unveiled a new banner for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit that, in 5000px of horizontal digital space, visualizes the entire story. Or at least, the entire story that I think we'll be seeing in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Lots of great visuals and imagery in this as a perfect tease for The Hobbit. P. Jackson to Shoot THE HOBBIT in 3D with New RED EPIC Cameras

Jim Jannard, the owner and founder of RED DIGITAL CINEMA, has announced that Jackson will be using the company’s soon to be released EPIC digital cameras to shoot the two film adaptation in 3D.  Engadget reports that the new camera has 5k resolution, is able to shoot up to 128 frames per second, and has a new HDRx mode “for the highest dynamic range of any camera ever made.” All this is to say that RED has produced a camera that is considerably smaller, lighter, and more powerful than any on the market today.

Jackson will reportedly be using at least thirty of the new EPIC cameras on the production. For more on the technology, and what we know about The Hobbit so far, hit the jump.

Behind-the-Scenes Photo from Tintin

Just like James Cameron's Avatar, the powers that be have tricked us yet again with the very first photo from The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. Revealed on Empire yesterday, the photo is another simple behind-the-scenes shot of Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis in their motion capture outfits with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson standing by. As a reminder (and if you couldn't tell by reading the names on their outfits), Bell plays Tintin, Serkis plays Captain Haddock, and they're joined by Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Tony Curran, and a few others.

Avatar Expensive Movie of All Time?

Update: Time has added the following to its article: “The original version of this story misstated the cost of the film Avatar as being in excess of $300 million. The correct figure is in excess of $200 million.”

When James Cameron’s Avatar was announced a couple years back, we wondered if it would be the most expensive movie of all time. There have been a few films since the initial announcement that topped Fox’s proposed $200 million budget. Spider-Man 3 producers insisted that the film’s budget didn’t exceed $270 million, but some reports claimed a number closer to $350 million. But like most films, and especially films made on the cutting edge, the initial budget and the budget after all is said and done, are vastly different.
