Knowing - What Did You Think?

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Director Alex Proyas is best known and loved for two films from his past - The Crow and Dark City. When he directed I, Robot in 2004, many people thought he finally hit the bottom of the barrel, but now he's back, five years later, with another edgy new dark thriller. So is this Proyas' triumphant return? Did Nic Cage make a comeback, too? Was this as formulaic and as boring as most people seemed it would be? Or was Knowing as edgy and thrilling as Proyas' two prior cult classics? Sound off below, leave your thoughts, and let us know what you thought of Knowing!

To fuel the fire, I'd say Proyas is definitely back. In fact, he was never gone, as I even enjoyed I, Robot. But as for Knowing, despite Nic Cage's marginal acting, it really was one hell of a unique cinematic experience.

New Knowing Photos

Can it get any more unexciting than this? While I'm actually excited to see Knowing, this new batch of photos found over on SlashFilm is instead, just plain boring. We get three new photos of Nic Cage running, running, and kneeling. Oh, how so very interesting! Realistically, these are utter trash and should never have been put out. So why the heck am I running them? Good question! Well, because there's nothing better to talk about at the moment.

I should've mentioned this before everyone actually saw the photos, but do yourself a favor and just watch the trailer again. It's a much better way of building up hype for this than these awful photos!

Knowing is directed by Alex Proyas of The Crow, Dark City, Garage Days, and I, Robot previously. The script was written by a collaboration of screenwriters including Ryne Douglas Pearson ("Simple Simon"), Juliet Snowden (The Need, Boogeyman), Stiles White (The Need, Boogeyman), and Stuart Hazeldine (upcoming Paradise Lost). Summit is releasing Knowing in theaters on March 20th, 2009.

First look at Nic Cage in Alex Proyas' Knowing

Just last week, FirstShowing wrote about the plot details of Knowing, the latest sci-fi thriller film from Alex Proyas. Now just a week later production has started and the first official photo has been revealed. USA Today has debuted our first unimpressive look at Nic Cage as Ted Myles, but at least it gives us a great idea of what to expect - catastrophic mayhem. As a reminder of the story, in Knowing, Cage discovers a letter buried in a time capsule outside a school. It doesn't mean anything to him until he sees the digits 911, which sets him on a course to prevent further catastrophes. Maybe Proyas will finally get back to his roots?

Both Nic Cage and Alex Proyas speak out regarding 9/11 concerns. "I know that number jumps out at people," Cage says. "But that's just a beginning point for the movie. And that doesn't mean you can't mention it. It's time for a return to dark thrillers that are relevant. We're already living in a world where up is down." As for Proyas, he gives one of the best explanations. He explains that although a film should lose its aim to entertain, "there's still a need to address what's going on in people's lives. Hopefully, we do it in a light that's a positive experience but still responsible." Amen to that!

It seems that the filmmakers involved in Knowing may be just a bit worried that the mention if 9/11 may bring up bad memories for moviegoers, but I think they're just covering themselves. What I mean is that both Cage and Proyas addressed 9/11 in the article, which is interesting because with films like United 93 and World Trade Center, I didn't think it was such a big issue anymore. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Knowing and hope that it delivers like Proyas' older films The Crow and Dark City.
